Not a Very Good People Sorter August 10, 2011
I only got eight right. I really thought I would do way better. I heard everyone saying it was hard, and I made a few guesses, but I mostly thought it was fairly easy. I finished pretty quickly. Then I saw my score and realized I wasn’t near as good at it as I thought I was. I based my guesses mostly on skin color, then eyes, then hair. I think this is important to realize about ourselves. In our little county, there’s honestly not a whole lot of diversity. The majority of us are just white. I guess because of that, I’ve always thought it was pretty easy to tell if someone is a different race from me, but clearly putting people in a category isn’t easy.
Beloved Book Review August 9, 2011

Beloved is a story about slavery in the 19th century, written by Toni Morrison. The main character, Sethe, kills one of her daughters in order to keep her from being sold into slavery. The posse shows up to her house before she has time to kill her other three children. The story actually begins years later, with Sethe and the only child she has left, her youngest daughter, Denver, now about seventeen years old, living together in house 124, with the ghost of Sethe’s baby she murdered all those years ago, still haunting their house. An old friend that used to be a slave with Sethe, Paul D, comes and begins living in house 124 with Sethe and Denver. Then one evening, a younger girl, only a few years older than Denver, shows up to house 124, and Sethe decides to take her in, only to later find out, that this might be her murdered daughter, Beloved.
Though there are many themes in Beloved, I think the major theme would be that of Mother-Daughter relationships. Many of the plot points as well as conflicts come from the relationship between Sethe and Beloved, as well as Sethe and Denver.
Beloved is not your typical book on slavery. Honestly, I personally didn’t like this book much at all. But that isn’t to say that there aren’t plenty of people who would really enjoy it. I liked it at first but as it continued, it got more confusing and it dealt with a little too much supernatural and out-of-the-ordinary aspects and I couldn’t get into it anymore.
Though I didn’t enjoy this book specifically, Toni Morrison’s style of writing is very good, and there’s a chance I might read another one of her books. I think she’s a great author, but Beloved just wasn’t my type of book.
FINISHED!! July 23, 2011
I’m finished with summer reading!!! I’m so happy. Freshman and sophomore year I finished the day they were due, but I actually got done early this year. Which is nice. I’m happy to be finished with the work, but I’ll be relieved when I turn everything in and I’m *officially* done. And I can’t believe school starts in less then 2 weeks. This summer has flown by faster than ever. I’m kind of ready to go back, but I’ll definitely miss sleeping in and not having to worry about anything all day.
Another blog July 3, 2011
Soooooo, I definitely wish I would have seen the whole “Assignment” thing about needing one new post in June and one new post in July before June ended. :/ Oops. Sorry Mrs. Roper!! But after checking other classmates blogs I’ve seen I clearly wasn’t the one that missed the memo. Anyways.. I’m finished with Fahrenheit 451; I read it first and got it over with because I read it in 8th grade. Then I read A Farewell to Arms; it wasn’t bad. Now I’m reading Huckleberry Finn and I have exactly 121 pages left to read, and then I have to finish the questions. Most people I’ve talked to that have read this one have enjoyed it but it’s been my least favorite of the three. I feel that it’s very slow and I can’t stand the terrible spelling and grammar. I’m ready to be finished with this one.
My First Blog May 19, 2011
This is the first time I’ve ever used a blog for anything. I think this could be a good thing because I’ve never done it before, and I’m sure most of the other people in the class haven’t either, so it’ll be something new for all of us. I’m not really looking forward to it, but I’m not necessarily *dreading* it either.
